ASI Begins Inspection of Puri Jagannath Temple's 'Ratna Bhandar' for Structural and Security Assessment

Why in the News?

  • The ASI has begun inspecting the 'Ratna Bhandar' the treasury of Puri Jagannath Temple built by Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty to assess its structural integrity and security. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, Balram and their sister Subhadra.

About Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)

  • Established: 1861 during the time of Viceroy Lord Canning (1856-1862)
  • It was founded by Alexander Cunningham, often called the father of Indian archaeology.
  • Works under Ministry: Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
  • Statutory Status: It is a statutory body under the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act of 1958.
  • It is the premier organization for the archaeological research and protection of the cultural heritage of the nation.
