Why in News? 

The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) organized the Prani Mitra and Jeev Daya Award Ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.  

  • Four books on animal welfare laws and policies were released to aid veterinarians, policymakers, and field officials. 

About the Awards 

  • Prani Mitra Award (1966): Honors individuals and organizations for exceptional contributions to animal welfare and protection. 
  • Jeev Daya Award (2001): Recognizes animal lovers for their dedication to animal welfare. 

 Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) 

  • It is a statutory body under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, promoting animal welfare and preventing animal cruelty in India. 
  • Established: 1962 under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 
  • Headquarters: Ballabhgarh, Haryana 
  • Founder: Rukmini Devi Arundale 

 Functions 

  • Advises the Central & State Governments on animal welfare laws.
