Why in News?
President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated the National Tribal Festival, ‘Aadi Mahotsav,’ in New Delhi.
- Organized by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, the festival showcases India's vibrant tribal heritage, culture, and traditions. It is taking place at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi from February 16 to 24, 2025.
Aadi Mahotsav: Celebrating and Promoting Tribal Culture
While addressing the audience, President Droupadi Murmu emphasized that Aadi Mahotsav is a vital platform for showcasing and preserving India’s rich tribal heritage. The festival connects tribal entrepreneurs, artisans, and artists with national and international markets, offering them opportunities to display their skills and products.
The event provides a unique glimpse into tribal life, featuring traditional crafts, cuisine, clothing, jewelry, medicine, household tools, and sports. Government Initiatives for Tribal Welfare
Over the last decade, the Indian government has introduced several initiatives aimed at the economic and social upliftment of tribal communities.
Enhanced Budget Allocation for Tribal Development
- The budget for tribal development has increased fivefold, reaching ₹1.25 lakh crore.
- The tribal welfare budget has tripled, now standing at ₹15,000 crore.
Strengthening Tribal Identity and Development
President Murmu stressed that India's overall progress is linked to the well-being of its tribal communities. The government is implementing comprehensive strategies to preserve tribal culture while promoting economic and social growth.
Education and Employment: Key to Tribal Empowerment
President Murmu expressed satisfaction with the steady progress in education and employment opportunities for tribal communities, emphasizing that education is the foundation of development.
Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS)
- Over 1.25 lakh tribal students are receiving education through 470+ EMRS schools across India.
- These schools are bridging educational gaps in remote tribal regions by providing quality learning opportunities.
Healthcare and Medical Education Reforms
- In the last decade, 30 new medical colleges have been established in tribal-dominated areas to improve healthcare access.
- A National Mission on Tribal Health has been launched to tackle specific health issues among tribal populations.
- A key objective of this mission is to eliminate sickle cell anemia by 2047, significantly improving tribal healthcare.
